Diving points Montgrí Natural Park Medes and Baix Ter islands

The Montgrí Natural Park, the Medes Islands and the Baix Ter include the Montgrí mountain range and the Medes Islands archipelago. With lush flora and fauna, wrecks, underwater rock formations and caves. A seabed of precious ecological value.

Depth 4-22 meters.

Immersion South sheltered from the wind. In this dive will be appreciated the large fauna in seagrass meadow if headed towards Montgo beach.

Depth 6-25 meters. Punta Milà offers diving for all to enjoy, whatever the level of each. So advanced level divers begin to dive for Mila wall, about 25 meters deep. On clear days, from 18 meters and you can glimpse the background, full of detached blocks Montgrí mountain refuge for countless wrasses, octopus and occasionally some grouper.

A cave located at 19 meters, where lobster is usually some hosts, will serve as a reference point to find the way back to the Cova de la Sal where the other fellow, baptisms or first class diving, are enjoying their shallow dive. They can visit the Cova de la Sal, where old fishermen l’Escala stored huge amounts of salt for salting anchovies.

 

Depth 7-23 meters. This is a set of underwater caves of great interest to divers. The first tunnel is 16 m to the entrance of a large bow and shortcuts to move from west to east. Once across this hallway , follow the wall on your right and after about 30 m we find the first entry to a cave with air chamber at the end (a must use flashlights) . This large dome allows the diver to breathe filtered air there . Leaving the cave continue to the right to complete the second cave curved path and located about 18 m deep. Tunnel full of ledges and corners harboring lobsters, Santiago residents and countless sponges and corals.

Leaving aside the caves, it is one of the simplest and most beautiful dives in the area. We recommend going with a guide to make the most of the caves.

Prof. 12-22 m. En esta inmersión nos podemos divertir mucho sin tener que recorrer grandes distancias.

Una vez el barco anclado en el fondo, podemos descender por el cabo de la boya o bien tomar como referencia cualquiera de las dos rocas. El itinerario habitual describe un ocho entre las formaciones rocosas.

Justo en la parte inferior del bajo que no asoma a la superficie, hay un pequeño túnel a unos 15 m de profundidad, apto para todos los niveles y en el que se han llegado a ver hasta tres congrios en su interior y varias langostas en la entrada Este. Para realizar un buceo más completo, se rodeará la roca exterior con la posibilidad de recorrer unos treinta metros dirección Este hallando otra gran roca para explorar. En todo el trayecto se debe de estar atento a la posibilidad de ver alguna morena enrocada.

La versatilidad de los diferentes recorridos permite el buceo de nivel alto, medio o para principiantes. Se recomienda el uso de boya descompresión por el paso frecuente de embarcaciones recreativas.

 

Depth 38-44 m . This is a real wreck and that was not expressly sunk. It sank in 1971 probably due to bad weather and other adverse conditions. The ship was carrying Carrara marble that still lies in their warehouses .

This wreck is something difficult angle but still standing at 42 m depth and the hull is intact .

The bow portion points north and south aft . The tour usually starts visiting the wineries and covered as long as visibility allows. The funding is usually stern, but always make sure and it is highly advisable to install a guide out because normalment visibility is not very good at this point , but during the months of July and August , sometimes have had the pleasantly surprised to be viewed from only 15 m deep.

The fauna is extraordinarily abundant, large and often hidden in holes in the boat. It is easy to see sunfish , crayfish, lobster and huge banks of three tails .

Diving only suitable for experienced and advanced level divers.

 

Prof. 10-18 m . Buceo idóneo para los niveles de iniciación e incluso avanzados, o como segunda inmersión del día.

Zona de roca y arena perfectamente mezcladas. La profundidad máxima dentro de la cala alcanza los 18 m, pero si deseamos ir a mayor profundidad debemos salir en dirección Este.

Siguiendo la roca a mano derecha, en dirección a L’Estartit, tenemos una pared llena de contraluces y pequeñas cuevas. Si navegamos en esa misma dirección hasta la punta encontraremos un arco a unos 16 m repleto de langostas en su parte derecha. Cruzando la cala en dirección a L´Escala, hallaremos una roca cuya base se encuentra a 18 m y su parte superior a 3 m.

Inmersión de aproximadamente 40 min para disfrutarla en todo momento. Fauna diversa, con poliquetos, langostas y coral principalmente.

 

Depth 6-25 meters. Three Les Coves are, in fact, a cave with bats inside, visible from the surface and allow the passage of vessels. For the diver these are not the caves that are most interest, but which are located to the east of Punta de Les Tres Coves. Beginning at -6 meters towards east, we find a small passage (very fair for a diver and sludge at the bottom) of about ten meters long whose entries are full of life: three tails, brown, coral and nudibranchs.

Immersion is easy on your journey north wall as it continues throughout the dive to a depth suitable for all levels.

 

Depth 12 to 25 meters. In Les Vetes we can, if we wish, we do cave diving; who do not wish to delve into them, they can simply choose to stretch the funds arm of rock that forms the tip.

On the south wall of the cove we find an arc that crosses the arm of rock, about 17 m at its outer face we will surprise a few blocks detached from the cliffs with lots of marine fauna. Bordering on the left side we will going back to the creek to delve between the corridors formed by the fallen rock. The whole journey takes about 18 meters.

For those wishing to visit the caves, it is advisable to start with the Cathedral in which will access through a grand entrance at 19 meters. It is a large cave, unos18 m, about 40 meters long and with a large air dome on your roof. Inside the Cathedral there are branches to consider. Leaving the Cathedral on the left, a hallway with background limo take us diagonally to the other end of the cove.

Depth 4 – 30 meters. One of the most popular dives are performed by the variety of courses that can be done. Describe a pair.

Once the boat moored to the west of the large island, descend the wall and found himself immediately with a wide tunnel that has its entrance at 16 meters; I will cross to head eastwards with a background of 30 meters. Here we will see some blocks grouped where all kinds of wildlife live. On the way back we can go around the island, on the left side, as it is rich in wildlife, rather than re-cross the tunnel because surely something muddied over the divers.

Another route for mid-level divers will skirt the small islet keeping an eye on the orientation and enjoying the variety of species found in our wake.

This is an easy dive, especially with regard to guidance is concerned, but is not protected from passing ships.

 

Depth 22-35 meters. The Reggio is a wreck of 122 meters; was sunk for the enjoyment of divers. Currently lying on a background of 32 meters, broken into three pieces: aft, central and forward.

Down the coast, we find the stern of Reggio, sunk 32 meters deep in rocky and sandy area. We may also access the wreck down a line attached to the surface buoy.

The wreck is broken into three parts. The first one we found was the stern; after a short tour, and out of their warehouses, we can get to the mast is in the middle area (near the central area of the wreck); much further east lies the bow of Reggio.

If visibility permitting, you can enjoy 20 minutes of no decompression diving and we will have visited one of the wrecks Montgrí area of interest for divers with advanced level. Among other species, lobsters, schools of bream and three tails are guaranteed in this Inmersio.

Finish our dive lurking among the rocks near the coast in search of some hidden octopus.

 

Depth 20-33 meters. Diver’s experience, we can choose the itinerary. The tunnel through the island of Pedrosa, about 70 meters long, is completely straight, very wide and high, so that presents no difficulty. Find the entrance at 1 meter where the surface forms a crack, or 16 m in the west side of the island.

At all times you can see the light in and out, providing security during travel. Walls plastered with coral, sponges and anemones colors and backlighting that can be admired in his side lift, making it one of the most beautiful places tunnels. Upon exiting the east side, the tunnel reaches 21 meters; for more experienced divers, it is recommended to turn the island on your left side. Those who have ever visited the tunnel, can go up cliffs there and enjoy a dive between coralligenous blocks located below 30 meters.

Corvallos, bream, sea fans and coral are secured throughout the dive.

 

14-45 meters,  deep diving. Immersion’s advanced level. Puig is an underwater rocky outcrop with three peaks that fail to rise to the surface. The highest peak, where fitted, the place of descent, is situated 14 meters deep. It is in this mound where we dive. Down by the guide out and once on the Puig we choose to continue down to 40 m, or stay on the platform located about 27 meters is performed. The lobsters are hiding waiting holes in this rock.

Initiate the ascent surrounding the Puig, slowly climbing up the wall of the mound without having to enter decompression (depending on the time line). It’s easy to find yellow gorgonians, banks bream, barracuda, moray eels, lobsters and some scorpion fish. If visibility allows us, from the bottom we can see the boat moored to the buoy.

This dive is important to be attentive to the air consumption given the depth.
